The Centre has issued a clarification about the possible updation of supporting documents in the Aadhaar after ten years. It is not mandatory, and the Ministry has encouraged people to update their documents but has not made it mandatory.
The ministry said that the Aadhaar number has emerged as proof of identity for residents in India. It is also being used by many in India to avail of government schemes and services. “Residents who have an old Aadhaar, issued 10 years ago and haven’t updated it since then are encouraged to update their records,” the ministry added.
Recently-issued gazette notification directly encourages residents to update their documents every 10 years. This should help readers understand the importance of ensuring that they have up-to-date IDs, according to UIDAI.
